SummaryJohn Cuthbert Adams was an Englishman who arrived in New Zealand in 1874 and settled in Tauranga two years later. He started off as a building contractor and was later an auditor to the Tauranga Borough Council, and property valuer. He was elected to the Borough Council in 1907, Deputy Mayor in 1910 and elected Mayor in 1917.

Adams built Taiparoro House in 1882 in Fifth Avenue for his family, which included 11 children. He also built one of the first holiday houses at Mount Maunganui (still standing) in Adams Avenue.SourcesJournal of the Tauranga Historical Society Number(s) 24, 48, 17, 59, 60.
