SummaryAnglican clergyman, newspaper editor and Ōmokoroa landowner. Born Derwent Park, Tasmania, son of former Van Diemen’s Land Attorney-General Joseph Tice Gellibrand and Anne Isabella Kerby. Educated in England and ordained in the Church of England; became the first minister of All Saints, South Hobart. Married Selina Hannah Evans in 1849. The couple had no children but adopted Elizabeth Winspear, known as “Dottie”. Visited New Zealand in 1874–1875, travelling widely and corresponding with Selina and Elizabeth about land, economic prospects and colonial society. Emigrated with them in 1876 and acquired extensive land at Ōmokoroa from 1877, where he established an orchard and vineyard and planted exotic trees raised from Tasmanian seed. His wife drowned in March 1878 while returning from the marriage of Elizabeth to Arthur Algernon Crapp. Gellibrand died at Ōmokoroa on 10 October 1887.
