The British carrier HMS Eagle is visible in the background of this photograph of Supermarine Spitfire Mk.VC spotted on the deck of the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Wasp (CV7) in 1942. Wasp loaded the Royal Air Force Spitfires on 3 May 1942 and ferried them to the Mediterranean Sea. Here they were launched on 9 May 1942 to reinforce the Britishheld Malta (Operation Bovery). A Grumman F4F4 Wildcat of fighter squadron VF71 is parked on the left (with radial engine and folded wings). Both carriers launched 64 Spitfires. The photograph is found in the U.S. Navy Naval Aviation News 1 October 1945 which can be downloaded at http://www.history.navy.mil/nan/backissues/1940s/1945/1Oct45.pdf
