SpeakerSouthey, Charles Carrington, 1889-1976 (Person)IntroductionThe poem I am going to read to you is entitled Ambition.
The man who writes it does not wish to become a famous soldier or a great statesman or anything like that. All he wants is to live a simple, happy life. A friend to everyone, to be one who loves the beautiful things of life, such as friendship and loving kindness, and to be loved in return.
I wish no niche within the hall of fame,
No monument of bronze or crumbling stone,
No fickle populace to shout my name,
No arch triumphant, crown, or throne.
But, be it said, when I have reached the end of life's rough road:
He seemed to try to make each bird and beast a loving friend.
The flowers nodded when he passed them by,
And children welcomed him to join their play.
For those who laughed, he multiplied their cheer.
He had, for those who toil, a helping way.
For those who mourn, a sympathizing tear. YouTube
