Tauranga Centennial, 1982 (Event)

A Public Centennial Committee was formed to coordinate events and commissions, some of their agendas and meeting minutes are in the archive collection Ams 303/3.

Two books were published:

A Centennial history of Tauranga, by W.H. Gifford and H.B. Williams.

Tauranga 1882-1982: The Centennial of gazetting Tauranga as a borough, researched and written by Alan Charles Bellamy.

The HMNZS Waikato was in port for four days as part of the celebrations.

Footage of some events was captured by J.B. Kirk, C.R.Thomas and Norman W. Blackie (F40328).

The local Philatelic Society's Stamp Fair was reported to be a "big Centennial event" by the Bay of Plenty Times on 3 September 1982. 

Local identity Bob Owens (Sir Robert Arthur Owens) brewed a 'Bob's Centennial Brew with Leopard Brewery (Ams 476/1/2).
