Tauranga RSA hand-coloured aerial images by Alf Rendell
Datec. 1950sCollection SummaryThree hand-coloured aerial images taken by Alfred Hugh Rendell (1917-2019) c. 1950s.DescriptionThree hand-coloured images of Tauranga RSA and Tauranga from the air - mounted as murals. These were possibly commissioned by the Tauranga RSA and taken by Rendell, Alfred Hugh 1917-2019, in the late 1950s.
Alf Rendell, author of "Rendell's Tauranga, Historic Tauranga from above", was a well known local photographer as was his father Robert John Rendell 1875-1941 before him.
In the mid- to late 1940s oblique aerial photos, and in particular hand-coloured enlarged prints, were being popularised countrywide by White’s Aviation and a number of other operators. Alf started to use the Tauranga Aero Club’s Tiger Moth as a platform for taking a series of views that showed a rapidly growing Tauranga (Brett Payne, THS blog 2023). Alf's sister Marj (Marjorie West), hand-coloured many of his photographs and it is likely she may have coloured this collection as well.CreatorRendell, Alfred Hugh, 1917-2019LevelCollectionSourcesTauranga Historical Society blog: 2023 by Brett Payne, Tauranga Photographers: Alf Rendell
