Stewart, George Vesey, 1831-1920 (Person)

SummaryBorn Brighton, Sussex, 3 October 1831; third son of Captain Mervyn Stewart of Martray, County Tyrone, and Frances Vesey. Educated in London and at the College of Civil Engineers, Putney, before entering Trinity College Dublin (BA 1856). He married Margaret Torrens Miller in 1856 (issue: nine children), and later married Alice Amelia Ellen Hagerty in 1917. An estate agent and farmer in Ireland, he emigrated to New Zealand, arriving at Port Chalmers in early 1874 on the Mongol. After surveying potential districts, he selected land at Katikati and organised special settlements there and later at Te Puke, promoting and facilitating the migration of approximately 4,000 settlers, chiefly from the British Isles. He published promotional material on emigration and settlement. First mayor of Tauranga (1882); also chairman Tauranga County Council and Tauranga Harbour Board, and active in the Katikati Highway Board, school committee, and other local bodies. Appointed JP and later OBE.
