Te Puke (Place)

SummaryRural service town in the Western Bay of Plenty. The name Te Puke is derived from the Māori words te (“the”) and puke (“hill”).

Located approximately 28 kilometres south-east of Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty, Te Puke is internationally recognised as the Kiwifruit Capital of the World. The district is one of New Zealand’s most important horticultural regions, producing more than half of the country’s kiwifruit crop and making a significant contribution to the local and national economy.

Mana whenua of the region are primarily of Te Arawa, one of the waka that made the great migration from Hawai’iki to Aotearoa. Tapuika and Waitaha are the two resident iwi of Te Puke.  To the north of Te Puke, there are two Waitaha marae located at Manoeka. These are Hei and Hāraki.

Organised European settlement began to take shape in the 1880s when George Vesey Stewart established the planned settlements of Katikati and Te Puke, attracting farming families to the district.
