This collection covers the time Harold Willey Hudson was employed by Henderson and Macfarlane Ltd to take possession of Jarvis Island for its guano supply. Hudson was accompanied by Henry Winkelmann, who went on to become a notable photographer. Due to an unfortunate series of events, the pair were stranded on the remote Central-Pacific island for a period of seven months, during which they relied on meagre supplies. They were eventually rescued on 23 March 1882 by a small boat containing the Captain of the brigantine “Borealis” and two Pacific islanders. A folder of correspondence relating to the island, which dates from the 1930s, indicates the enduring impact of this experience on Hudson.
