Tauranga Survey Office Plans Overview (1950-1994)

Date1950-1994Collection SummaryTown series record maps first drawn in the 1950s and regularly updated as late as the 1990s with boundary changes and related property drawing numbers. DescriptionTauranga City Library subscribes to the Institute of Cadastral Surveying "Pre-300,000 Drawing Plans" database, currently installed on Research Computers within He Puna Wānanga at He Puna Manawa (Tauranga Library) as well as at the archive facility in Mount Maunganui. The database has well over 1.5 million drawings of all types, including:

Maori land plans
Private property plans
Towns and villages
Early development blocks and runs
Roll plans
Topographical mapping (1880 to 1950)
South Auckland large scale town and rural property record maps

Presented here are the Tauranga City record maps arranged by local expert Colin Adams as a quilt diagram in order to provide a high level overview. The quilt is made of numbered tiles, which allude to the order in which city grew outward over the past 100 years. The tiles are attached below.

Instructions:
1. Note the tile number you need using either the quilt diagram thumbnail to your right or it's full version below
2. Select that tile number from the series below to open the full sized map
3. Each map records related/earlier maps using numbers with the prefixes detailed below. These numbers can be looked up onsite at Tauranga City Library within Ngā Wāhi Rangahau, or purchased directly from LINZ.

Plan prefixes applied to Tauranga drawings:

DP - deposited plan, or DPS for maps created after the formation the South Auckland land district
LT - land title plan, or LTS for maps created after the formation the South Auckland land district
ML – Māori land, and

SO - Survey office CreatorLand Information New Zealand: Toitū te whenua

Digitised survey maps and plans can be bought directly from LINZ (click this link). While a few NZ survey plans have been lost, the majority are digitally available for purchase. Orders can be placed by plan number at the LINZ website, without a preview image, so accuracy in plan prefix and number is essential. After payment, delivery to your email is typically quick, but note that there are no refunds. He Puna Wānanga, in the Tauranga branch of Te Ao Mārama - Tauranga City Libraries, hosts an extensive digital collection of NZ survey plans. These range from the 1860s to the 1990s, totaling over a million drawings, and are organized by plan number. Word searches are not supported. Plans not included are the LINZ metric plans starting from number 300,000, introduced circa 1973.
