Reference Number2008.0021DescriptionA daguerreotype set in a case with a lid, made of wood covered with a fine brown leather on the outside, with a metal hook on the side to close. The inside of the case is lined with burgundy velvet, and the daguerreotype is mounted under a gold metal surround, set under glass. The daguerreotype has been coloured by hand, and is a portrait of a man dressed in a red military tunic. A note found with the daguerreotype written in Miss. G. Nevell's hand identifies the man as Henry Norton, Miss. Nevell's Mother's eldest brother. The note outlines details of his life and tragic death, and dates the photograph at 1855 when Henry Norton was 18 and in the uniform of the Guernsey Militia.. Although not recorded in The Elms Trust receipt book, it is likely this item was donated by Miss. G. Nevell the Grand daughter of Captain William Nevell, as a note accompanying the daguerreotype is written in her hand.Physical DescriptionDocumentary Artifact. Daguerreotype
