A Bay of Plenty Times article published on Saturday 9 June 1877 noted: "A successful first meeting of the Free Templar Total Abstinence and Benefit Society was held at Mr Lundon’s cottage in Willow street on Wednesday evening. Fifteen members were initiated, and it was decided to hold the weekly meetings on Tuesday evenings in future."
