The letters were written during Joseph Tice Gellibrand's trip to New Zealand in search of land to purchase for farming. They are dated from 4 December 1874 to 5 December 1874 and addressed from Melbourne, placing them early in Gellibrand's travels.

Joseph Tice Gellibrand would later return to the country with Selina and their adopted daughter, Elizabeth. The family settled in Omokoroa.
