The letters were written during Joseph Tice Gellibrand's trip to New Zealand in search of land to purchase for farming. They were sent from the Melbourne Club and the first is titled Wednesday evening, dating it 2 December 1874 and placing it early in Gellibrand's travels.

Joseph Tice Gellibrand would later return to the country with Selina and their adopted daughter, Elizabeth. The family settled in Omokoroa.
