Len Castle was Auckland-born and trained as a teacher.
He began to make pottery in 1947, teaching himself the basics of the craft. In later years he was to learn from great international practitioners and bring the skills he acquired back to New Zealand. He went to St Ives in Cornwall to work with the famous English potter, Bernard Leach, in the late 1950s and in the next decade he studied in Japan and travelled to China and Korea. He became one of New Zealand's most influential potters.
