John Roy trained in Whanganui, graduating in 1997 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring in ceramics. He is an award-winning potter/ceramacist based in Tauranga and his work is held in many public collections including the Tauranga Art Gallery, the Auckland War Memorial Museum, the James Wallace Arts Trust, and the Waikato Museum and Art Gallery.
In 2012 John was an artist in residence at Tylee cottage in Whanganui.
