DateApril 2015DescriptionPaul Ronayne came into Tauranga City Library during the 'Threads of Memory' project and talked about his relative John Gregors Petersen (1895-1915), who was killed in action at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915.

John Gregors Petersen was born in 1895 to Carl John Gregors and Johanne Antonette Frederikke Petersen. He was also known as 'John George Petersen'. John's father Carl, died the year he was born, at just 42 years of age (reg. 1895/3079). John himself was killed in action at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. His obituary appeared in the Wairarapa Daily News, 15 June 1915. It read as follows:

"The name of another Carterton boy is added to the roll of honour on the latest casualty list, that of Corporal John Gregors Petersen, youngest son of Mrs A. E. Petersen, of Park Road, Carterton, says the Carterton "News". The gallant young fellow met his death in the first fight at the Dardanelles, when the New Zealanders earned the praises of their King for devotion and bravery"
