The Norman Blackie Collection

DescriptionNorman Blackie (1899-1993) was an amateur filmmaker who lived much of his life in Tauranga. He was most active between the years 1932 and 1954. He and his wife Odine moved to Tauranga in 1942 where he worked as a secretary for a local sawmilling company. He was a member of the Tauranga Movie Club. A camera he used, the Keystone Model A-7 16mm movie camera sits within the Tauranga Heritage Collection (0007/19).

In 1999 Tauranga Library deposited some 22 Norman Blackie films with Ngā Taonga and some of these have been accessible on their website for many years.

In 2021 the Tauranga City Libraries' Heritage and Research team began to arrange for these films to be digitised at high quality. The first of these, five in total, are viewable below. See also this 5-minute introduction as part of The Past and the Curious
