Anne O'Brien née Roberts at the Mount Maunganui Primary centenary, 2013
Date2013Reference NumberAV 14-001DescriptionAn interview between Ben White, Information Librarian at Tauranga City Libraries, and Anne O'Brien, a former student and teacher at Mount Maunganui Primary School. The interview was conducted in 2013 during the school's centenary celebrations. Anne O'Brien remembers her days as a pupil at the school, where they played games like bullrush and long ball during playtime, and how they had to have a handkerchief pinned on their front during fingernail inspection. She also talks about the sand hills covered with pine trees that used to be where Blake Park is now, and how milk was delivered in a horse and cart by Mr. Scofield. As a teacher during the war, Anne O'Brien recalls the air raid drills they had to do. Despite the challenges of teaching a large number of students with different learning styles and abilities, and dealing with difficult home lives, Anne O'Brien found teaching to be one of the most rewarding professions.
