Date2013Reference NumberAV 14-003DescriptionInformation Librarian Ben White interviews Kenneth Millar. Kenneth shared several memories of his time at Mount Maunganui primary school. He remembered the old potbelly stove in the school that was charged up with wood during winter to keep the students warm. He also recalled the old cocoa pot that was boiled on the stove, and how they had to cool it down by putting their cups out in the puddles.
Kenneth fondly reminisced about the footpaths around Mount Maunganui, which were made of crushed shells, and the central strip of tarseal down the middle of the road that everyone bribed for. He remembered the bakery where his father worked and the big plantation of trees he passed on his way to school.
Kenneth also recalled the school swimming lessons at Pilot Bay and how they had to change into their togs in the lupins.
