Pam Gibbs at the Mount Maunganui Primary centenary, 2013
Date2013Reference NumberAV 14-007DescriptionInformation Librarian Ben White interviews Pam Gibbs, a former student of Mount Maunganui primary school, who shares her memories of the area. She recalls being taken by her father to a fire at a sawmill in the middle of the night and seeing the first neon lights at a big furniture shop. She also remembers an annual race to the top of the mountain from Salisbury Park, where her family lived. Pam had three brothers who also attended the school, and they were all athletes. Pam does not remember any specific subjects she learned in school or the names of her teachers, but she does remember her childhood home, which is still standing today. Pam's home was isolated, and she and her family would often fish in the area, catching snapper. Overall, Pam's memories provide a glimpse into life in Mount Maunganui in the mid-20th century.
